You are excited to have secured the signature of the next hire for your business. The individual has accepted your offer, signed the paperwork and resigned from their current company. They are working their notice period and looking forward to joining you.
Don’t wait for them to start before making them feel an integral part of your business.
During their notice period their employer has a number of weeks to try and convince them to stay, making them promises and using their colleagues to apply peer pressure to change their mind.
They are also going to still be receiving approaches from other recruiters and companies looking to attract them away from you.
Remember, the further they are through their notice period, the sooner they can start with you (and other companies should they be able to convince them).
Don’t let all of your hard work during the hiring process go to waste by allowing them to slip away during the notice period.
As recruiters, we keep in regular contact with them during this process, but you are going to be their new employer. Ways to keep them engaged include;
· Give them a weekly courtesy call.
· Share exciting news releases and company information with them.
· Meet them for a coffee or a meal during this period.
· Arrange conversations with some of their co-workers prior to joining.
Working remotely as opposed to being in the office has made formal inductions a thing of the past but this does not mean they cannot feel fully engaged.
You want your next employee to be fully engaged when they start, our advice is to make them feel that way before they start.
Often companies do not realise the importance of this until they have become a casualty of it.
