How to make the best first impression on your first day

Beginning a new job is an exciting new time, but obviously we all know it can be daunting. So how do you make the very the best first impression in your new role?

Here are my top tips:

1) Prepare

Spend some time before your first day checking key information, such as an HR documentation you need to bring with you, your commute, starting times and location, and even what you will wear. Not only will preparation reduce the risk of making any unnecessary mistakes, it will also help ease your nerves. If working remotely, remember to test connections, passwords and any software/ equipment before your first day.

2) Ask questions

No one expects you to know everything, so don’t be afraid to ask questions and help yourself understand your new role, team and environment as quickly as possible. It’s also worth noting the attitude you have here is one that can really showcase you, your skills and your work ethic. Knowing the whys and how’s can aid more efficient learning help to identify development opportunities, and feel confident when asking questions to inform your role.

3) Keep in mind strategic connections

Be mindful of who your team is, who you will be working with more and who will be key connections for personal, professional and task-based development, Be authentic, polite and professional in your communication and start to develop these connections from the very outset. Don’t wait for people to connect with you, especially in remote working environments where it is harder to develop connections.
